Jane’s Updates

My journey through and beyond breast cancer

And it’s the Fall

So I’ve graduated a bit from the docs…

Every 4 months with Doctor Gressler (oncologist)

Every 6 months with Dr. McGlothin (surgeon)

My appointments and lab work have all been coming back really well at recent visits.  And I am feeling more energy come back every few months.

I am thankful for the wisdom I have gained and to be moving on in life. And I won’t ever take my health - or my friendhsips - for granted.

Wow… It’s nearly July now!

In June I received more validation that I’m still doing just fine with good lab results from my oncologist and an “all is well”  from my surgeon Dr. McGlothin. :)

Our celebratory trip is coming up fast…. We’ll fly to Belgium on July 11 and spend 3 days with our friends the Geelhands. Then, Paris for 3 days where we will connect with Beanie & Carly and family who will be there for a couple of weeks.  Then, we’re off to Italy… Florence for two nights, Rome for 3, and then Il Sorrento, Isle of Capri and Pompeii (a wonderful birthday present for Mike)! We’ll return home on July 27.

Hope you all are having a tremendous summer!

Watching me closely…

I had lab work done and an oncologist visit this week. Glad to report that all is well. Don’t need to see him or my surgeon until the end of summer :).

Past due on an update…

Hi everyone! Sorry I’ve been a slacker here. It’s kinda because life has gotten back to fairly normal. I’m still sore from my last surgery sometimes, but not too bad.

We’re getting ready for a convention at work and I have a new boss, so it’s seems there are never enough hours in the day to get work done. But I am working hard to get in more walks, get to bed earlier, spend more time building my faith, and I’m eating more nutritious food. But of course I still enjoy wine or beer or chocolate now and then so you can still be friends with me.

We have booked a trip for Europe this summer. It’s going to be extremely expensive, but the time is right. So, we’re goin’ for it. The kids are at the right age… they will remember it and the majority of the time they still like being with us. Who knows how much longer that will last! (Maggie will take driving lessons when we get home. Sigh.)

I have been checking in with my surgeon a bunch lately (final cosmetic tweaks), but only need to see my oncologist every 4 months now. So I’m happy to report that all is well. They are watching me closely to make sure it stays that way. Thanks for checking in on me.

Healing Along…

I continue to heal pretty well. It takes about 6-8 weeks to get through this one. I’ll see Dr. Newsom again March 31.

Still trying hard not to lift >10 pounds…

I feel pretty well… except that it was finally my turn to get a cold. Dave “one-upped” me with strep throat. I love that Zicam stuff. If you haven’t tried it, it is an over-the-counter remedy that really seems to shorten the length of a cold.

Our really big news is that we have been planning a trip to Europe for this summer, as a celebration. It’s costing far more than it should, with the dollar being worth so little, but timing seems right. We’re getting through this journey, and by the time the trip rolls around the kids will be 13 and 15. We feel it’s really important to make some memories now, as you just never know when life will throw you a new curve.

For now, one more week until the next visit with the surgeon. It will take 6-8 weeks to recover from this latest surgery, so I’m nearly half way through now. I’m healing just fine.

Doc says ‘A-okay’

Saw Dr. Newsom yesterday and he says that everything is taking as it should. I have had a little extra bleeding but everything else is going so well that he says he’s not concerned. If he’s not, I’m not. He’s been at this a long time and seen a lot of patients through the years. He’s very caring and I feel so lucky to have found him. That is a good thing about me living near Dallas, home of many ‘beautiful people.’ If you gotta have anything done for your boobs, there are some of top docs here!

Overall I haven’t had much pain, although I did just go for some Advil just now. I’ve been released back to work Monday and am driving again. I’m also reminding myself to get extra rest for a while. And not to lift much.

I’ll see Dr. Newsom again tomorrow (Monday).

Hello out there!

It was really nice to come home after surgery yesterday. I’m sore, but a little advil or aleve is all I need. Mike got me one of my favorite smoothies so life is good. I overdid it a bit today… Demolition on our hallway bathroom (near the guest room) starts in the morning. So, I thought I’d clear out a few things. That wasn’t such a great idea, so now I’m sofa surfing again and Mike is in charge of the bathroom clearing.

Can’t drive for a week; I’m trying to behave. It’s hard because I’m feeling fine. But I will try harder :).

Final Tune-UP

9:30 a.m. Jane’s currently in surgery for (what we hope will be) her final tune-up on reconstruction. Everything is going fine.

12:30 p.m. I met with Dr. Newsome, and he said everything went fine. Jane’s in the recovery room, and should join me here in the hospital room in an hour or so.

1:30 p.m. Jane’s here in the hospital room, and is feeling fine, though she will be drowsy for a while.

Jan. 26

I had another clear mammogram last week. Yeah! When I visited with my oncologist, my numbers were very good, too. Although I did extremely well through treatment and kept my routine pretty well, I feel like I must have been “coasting” more than I knew. Now, I’m initiating a lot of new things. I think that is a good indicator that I’m feeling more together and energetic. Unless it’s about 9 or 10 p.m. most night. I definitely require more sleep than I used to.

I visit with plastic surgeon Dr. Newsom tomorrow, to discuss plans for what I hope is final surgery on Feb. 18. He will shift a few things around to get me “evened out” and clean up some of my scars. I don’t think I’ll have to stay in the hospital for this one. Just day surgery.

Then I will just continue regular visits with my original surgeon, Dr. McGlothin, and my oncologist, Dr. Gressler, so that someone is checking me every few months.

In the meantime, I’ve continued ramping up my exercise and eating a balanced (low-fat) diet. Yes it seems I am still getting some of the chemicals worked out of my system, but I am feeling better and better with time. :)
